November 2008
Greetings to Hollencrest families and community members.
Welcome to Hollencrest Middle School! We are proud of the accomplishments of our students and the support of our parents and community volunteers. Our school is one that works towards preparing students for a successful transition to high school and beyond.
I am very excited about our new All Stars Intervention program after school. Our first day was Wednesday November 19th. We had over ninety 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students receiving high quality standards instruction, reviewing Quarter one skills and concepts and reinforcing study and test taking skills. We know these classes will significantly improve their academic performance. We are impacted and have begun a waiting list for quarter one. Not to worry, we will offer these courses every quarter. The next opportunity to attend will be in February. Keep your eyes and ears open for the information.
The year is progressing and we are fast approaching the holiday season. Our second progress reporting window will close next week and progress reports will be mailed home the first week in December. Not all students will receive a progress report, only those who have fallen behind in their studies or are in danger of failing. Progress reports should be reviewed carefully as they mark the halfway point of the quarter. This means students have 5 weeks to improve grades. We usually find that deficient grades are due in large part to absence of homework and classwork. Homework has a valuable purpose; it allows students to practice and study concepts and skills at home for mastery. Grades are impacted significantly by the amount of effort students place on homework assignments.
We know that many families have begun to make plans for the holidays. Our last day of school for the 2008 calendar year is December 19th and our first day back in 2009 is January 5th. Attendance tends to dip a little during the holidays and so do grades. Our students are accountable for learning world class standards and every day is valuable, so please try and make holiday plans that do not impact student attendance.
I hope everyone received our quarter one newsletter, “Huskie Express.” It is available in our main office if needed and will be published every quarter.
As always, thank you for your continued support and feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have.
