National Merit Scholarship Program

Commended Students in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program

West Covina and Edgewood high school seniors Nathan Han, George Rusu, Ethan Flaker, and Andrew Obeso have been named Commended Students in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Notice of Commendation from the school and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, was presented to the students in October.

“We are proud of our Bulldogs for their outstanding performance,” said Dr. Stephen Glass, principal at West Covina High School. “Nathan and George are two examples of students who have worked diligently and personally sacrificed for future reward. This accomplishment, among others, will certainly open doors for each student's postsecondary goals.”

“We are extremely proud of Ethan and Andrew,” said Dr. Roni Maddox, principal at Edgewood High School. “They both have worked hard and are very deserving of this commendation.  They are destined to do great things and in the words of Steve Jobs, we look forward to see how they make their dent in the universe.”

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students are placed among the top five percent of more than 1.6 million students who entered the competition by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

"The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success," commented a spokesperson for NMSC. "These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success."
