Red Ribbon Rally

Red Ribbon Rally brings the community together

Hundreds of students, parents, staff and community members gathered for this year’s Red Ribbon Rally on Saturday, October 28 at West Covina High School. Sponsored by the West Covina Noon and Sunrise Rotary Clubs, the rally featured Edgewood and West Covina High School student clubs; community-based organizations; local businesses; and police, sheriff, and fire departments.

Volunteers serving pancakesEveryone in attendance enjoyed free IHOP pancakes and entertainment from West Covina schools. Students as young as six years old performed at the stage. Performances ranged from dancing and cheerleading to singing and playing musical instruments. All guests eagerly participated in trackless train rides, inflatable obstacle courses, helicopter landing, and police and fire department demonstrations.

Although there were tons of fun activities and freebies, the event did not steer away from the purpose of the event: to make a difference. Each speaker, presenter and even booth representatives shared the importance of creating a drug and violence-free community. They specifically highlighted a college education and drug-free environment when children asked about the steps involved in pursuing a variety of career pathways.

Child listening to helicopter pilot s career pathwayRed Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country and generally takes place the last week in October. The campaign commemorates the ultimate sacrifice made by DEA Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, who died in 1985 at the hands of drug traffickers. The following year, the California State PTA adopted the Red Ribbon Campaign and in 1988 Red Ribbon Week was recognized nationally.

Red Ribbon Week serves as a vehicle for communities and individuals to make a commitment of living a drug-free life with the ultimate goal of creating a drug-free America. West Covina schools are proud to take part in reaching that goal.
