The West Covina High School Air Force Junior ROTC program hosted their 13th annual Veterans Day Ceremony Thursday, November 9, honoring all veterans for their service.

“This year’s ceremony focus was on the Vietnam War and its veterans,” said Jesus Acuna-Perez, Air Force Junior ROTC Senior Aerospace Science Instructor and Retired Air Force Captain. “As a nation, we are indebted to them.”

The ceremony, also known as Operation Indebtedness, included a skit by the Theatre Department; choir and band performances; a flag ceremony and moment of silence for fallen heroes; and presentations of Purple Heart medals.

The Purple Heart is awarded in the name of the President of the United States to any member of the Armed Forces of the United states who has been wounded or killed.

Junior Air Force ROTC students“West Covina High School and our cadets were able to demonstrate a small but very heartfelt appreciation for their service and sacrifices. I am extremely proud of our students, staff and leadership,” said Capt. Acuna-Perez. “Together we exemplified sincere gratitude.”

Elected officials such as Assemblywoman Blanca E. Rubio and Senator Josh Newman also spoke to the crowd of students and families, recognizing every service member past and present.
