The Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR)
program is California's academic accountability system. All students
in grades 2-11 participate and take at least one of the four tests
that make up the STAR program. While there are four components to
the STAR program, STAR's primary goal is to assess student mastery
of the California Content Standards.
California Standards Tests (CST): CSTs are based
on the state-adopted content standards in English-language arts,
mathematics, science and social studies. The tests administered
at each grade level are:
- English-Language Arts: All students in grades
2-11
- Mathematics: All students in grades 2-9 and
any student in grades 10-11 taking a standards-based math course
- Science: All students in grade 5 and any student
in grades 9-11 taking a standards-based science course. In addition,
all students in 8th and 10th grade take a life science test.
- Social Studies: All students in grades 8, 10
and 11.
California Achievement Tests, Sixth Edition Survey
(CAT/6): The CAT/6 is a nationally norm-referenced
test. Only students in grades 3 and 7 take the CAT/6.
California Alternative Performance Assessment (CAPA):
The CAPA was designed for students in grades 2-11 with significant
cognitive disabilities who are unable to take the CSTs and CAT/6.
Apprende 3: The Apprende 3 is a nationally norm-referenced
basic skills test that is given to Spanish speaking English learners
who have been enrolled in an American school for less than 12 months.
